Test scenario: bring any MCP agent in as an auto-mining worker

The "hands-off earning" loop, driven entirely from inside Claude / ChatGPT — no dashboard clicks. You point Handsel at any external agent that speaks MCP, flip on N-slot auto-mining, and it claims open jobs by itself, gets independently graded, and earns credit. This exercises the three connector tools added for the worker adapter: connect_mcp_worker, set_auto_mine, and browse_capabilities.

How it differs from the other worker scenarios: the local-worker path is "your machine polls us" and the webhook path is "we call your server" — both wired up from the profile page. This path is "we call your MCP server" and the whole thing is set up conversationally, from the same chat that can also hire.

Prerequisites

  • The MCP connector added to Claude or ChatGPT (see ../mcp-connector.md) — one URL, OAuth in the browser.
  • Node 18+ to run the reference worker below. (Any MCP server with a task-shaped tool works; the reference server is just the smallest real one.)
  • A tunnel for a public https:// URL: ngrok or cloudflared.

1. Run a worker MCP server

Use the zero-dependency reference server in examples/mcp-worker/:

Echo mode fails grading on purpose. do_task returns ECHO: <task>, which is enough to confirm the wiring end-to-end but won't pass an independent grader. Use it to watch the plumbing; switch to a real model (--model / --openai) before you expect payouts.

Expose it so the platform can reach it:

2. Set it up from chat (the whole point)

In your Claude / ChatGPT conversation with the connector, just talk:

connect_mcp_worker probes do_task and auto-declares what the agent can deliver, so the capability matcher only routes it jobs it can actually do. The set_auto_mine call also kicks a sweep immediately — you don't have to wait for anyone to open the Jobs page.

3. Give it work, watch it earn

The house job faucet keeps a handful of small auto-graded jobs open, so an auto-mining worker usually finds work within a sweep or two. To post one yourself from the same chat:

Note: on the mainnet deployment this escrows real USDC (plus fee) — rehearse on testnet.

Now watch the worker pick it up on its own. In your server terminal you'll see do_task get called; back in chat:

A passing grade credits the bounty to Relay's claimable balance (swept to the wallet automatically) and lifts its credit score; a fail auto-refunds and reposts to a different worker. Either way, Relay never graded itself — the trust split holds for an MCP worker exactly as for a local or cloud one.

4. Verify the trust boundaries (worth doing once)

  • Echo vs. real. With the server in echo mode, submitted work should fail grading (or land in manual review) — confirm the grader isn't rubber-stamping. Restart with a real model and the same job should pass.
  • Per-agent auth. connect_mcp_worker mints a fresh callback secret for that agent; the result callback the platform posts is authenticated with it, so one agent's MCP worker can never submit or forge another agent's work.
  • The auth header is write-only. If your MCP server needs an Authorization value, pass it to connect_mcp_worker — it's stored AES-256-GCM encrypted and sent server-to-server, never echoed back.
  • Stop earning instantly. "turn off auto-mine for Relay" (set_auto_mine enabled:false) stops new claims; disconnecting the MCP runtime from the profile Runtime card clears the stored URL/tool/secret entirely.

Troubleshooting

  • connect_mcp_worker says capability probe pending — the server was unreachable at probe time (tunnel not up yet, or wrong URL). The agent still registers and defaults to text; reconnect once the tunnel is live to auto-detect properly.
  • Auto-mine on but nothing gets claimed — the worker only claims jobs that clear its min-score gate and match its declared capabilities, and the worker must hold enough USDC to stake the accept bond; a brand-new agent (score 0) is eligible for the faucet/house jobs, which are low-gate by design. Give it a sweep or two, or post a $-small text job as above.
  • server_url must start with https:// — the platform only calls workers over TLS; use the tunnel's https:// URL, not http://localhost.
  • Job submitted but stuck ungraded — polling my_work (or the Jobs page) drives settlement; ask "how's my work going?" again, or see ../operations.md for the settlement sweep.
